03.05.2019 ANNUAL EVALUATION CO2 FOOTPRINT 2018

By now everyone knows that climate change is the greatest ecological challenge confronting the world today. The average temperature is increasing because the quantity of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, primarily CO2, is increasing significantly, the so-called greenhouse effect.

5,611 tons CO2 is the total emission of Herbosch-Kiere for 2018. This is a quantity that is equal to the annual emissions of 280 Belgians. Of course we are not at the top with this footprint, but it is still worthwhile to commit to protecting the environment.

In the meantime, we have been committed to reducing CO2 for 7 years and we plan to continue to do so in the coming years.

In the calculation of our footprint, we take into account scope 1 (88%) of the CO2-performance ladder, direct emissions from our own fuel consumption and scope 2 (12%), indirect emission from use of electricity.

For the calculations of 2018, 2017 was used as a new reference year. The necessary efforts are being made to reduce CO2 emissions by 0.5% over the next 4 years. To achieve this goal, we have planned various actions between 2018 and 2021. For example, we estimate that our satellite office in Ghent can already cause a reduction of 4.5% on the diesel consumption of passenger cars, and this with an occupancy of only 25%.

But also the replacement of an old drilling machine for the foundation department, results in a 0.66% reduction on diesel consumption at the sites.

If we compare our CO2 emissions with our turnover, we can see that we have done much better than last year. In 2017, for example, we were at 75 tons of CO2 per million turnover and in 2018 at 68 tons of CO2. A decrease of 9%. So in 2018 we not only worked better, but also more efficiently in terms of CO2

HERBOSCH-KIERE  is member of the VBA Green Board, the association of Belgian contractors.

The Green Board is an environmental working group that informs the members about the new norms, legislations and tools. Environmental issues are examined and initiatives are launched. One of the main topics is the reduction of CO2.
